Built upon an old hospital that featured an older temple dedicated to the same saint, this spectacular building is the biggest church in Lesbos. It was inaugurated in and it combines different architectural elements of its time such as Baroque, Rococo, Neoclassical and Gothic. It is well worth entering the church to admire its beautiful altar and the icons.
Meet EMILY, the robotic lifeguard who has been requisitioned by the authorities on the Greek island of Lesbos to save the lives of thousands of refugees. As around 18, refugees arrive on European shores this month—nearly ten times more than the whole of January —more plan on risking their lives to make the treacherous journey across the Mediterranean. So far this year, 56 people have died making the crossing, according to the International Organization for Migration IOM.
In Greece, the coastguards announced, yesterday, the sinking of five refugees including three children between Turkey and Greece in the Aegean Sea while trying to immigrate to Europe. The Greek police said they had managed to rescue 83 refugees off the island of Lesbos, noting that searching operations still ongoing southeast of the Aegean to find the missing people. Previously in this month; the Greek Coastguard announced on 12 December that the 11 refugees, including two children and five women died, and 13 others were missing, after the sinking of their wooden boat in the outskirts of Farmakonisi Greek Island in the Aegean Sea, while the Greek police said that they had rescued 26 of the boat passengers.

Sappho of Lesbos c. Very little is known of her life and of the nine volumes of her work which were widely read in antiquity only fragments survive. Contrary to popular opinion on the subject, her works were not destroyed by closed-minded Christians seeking to suppress lesbian love poetry but were lost simply through time and circumstance.
We spent Saturday and Sunday packing minimal supplies for ourselves, and filling the rest of our suitcases with toys and candy for kids. Our group of twelve who are travelling to Lesbos. I'm in the front row, second from the right.
Lesvos is the third largest island of Greece and has a long history that goes back more than 3. It has been the birthplace of famous people, such as the poets Sappho and Alcaeos, Arion the Guitarist, and Pittacus, one of the seven wise men of ancient Greece. A tradition that even continues today and gives the island that distinctive atmosphere which makes it so different from the rest.
